Helping Men Build Strength, Clarity, and Balance

I'm Devin

Hi, I’m Devin Byrne, a Licensed Professional Counselor in the state of Virginia. I work with men who are dealing with stress, anxiety, burnout, and life transitions — guys who want to feel more balanced, confident, and grounded again.

I’ve had the privilege of working in both inpatient and outpatient treatment settings, supporting people through challenges related to depression, anxiety, substance use, and more. Over the years, I’ve worked with a wide range of individuals — men and women, adolescents and adults of all ages — as well as first responders and medical professionals navigating intense and demanding careers.

How I Work

In therapy, I primarily draw from Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT), mindfulness, and motivational interviewing. These approaches help clients better understand what’s driving their stress and learn tools to manage it in real life — not just in theory.

While these methods guide my work, my main focus is always on building a strong, genuine connection with each client. I believe that the therapeutic relationship itself is the foundation for meaningful change and lasting progress.

Why I Do This Work

Growing up with parents who both worked in health and mental health care inspired me to follow a similar path. Watching them help others find stability and peace showed me how powerful it can be when someone finally feels supported and understood. That experience led me into this field and still shapes how I show up for my clients today.

I became a therapist because I believe everyone deserves a place where they can talk openly without judgment — especially men, who often feel pressure to push through rather than reach out. Therapy gives you space to slow down, sort things out, and start moving forward with more clarity and confidence.

I’m a Licensed Professional Counselor

I earned both my B.S. in Psychology (2013) and M.S. in Rehabilitation and Mental Health Counseling (2017) from Virginia Commonwealth University. I’m licensed to practice in Virginia and continue to stay current on evidence-based methods that support emotional well-being, stress management, and resilience.

Outside the Office

When I’m not working with clients, you can usually find me at the gym, on a soccer field, planning my next travel adventure, or playing video games. I value balance, movement, and connection — the same things I help my clients work toward in therapy.

Let’s Get Started

If you’re ready to take a closer look at what’s weighing you down and start building a life that feels more balanced, I’d be glad to help. I offer a free 15-minute consultation where we can talk about what’s going on and see if it feels like a good fit — no pressure, just a real conversation.

I’m a Licensed Professional Counselor

I graduated from Randolph-Macon College with a degree in Sociology and earned my Master’s Degree in Mental Health and Rehabilitation Counseling from VCU here in Richmond. I’m always reading, learning, and deepening my understanding of this work because I genuinely love what I do.

Clients often describe my approach as laid-back, authentic, and invested. When I work with someone, it feels like we’re in it together. That energy excites me, and it’s what I show up for every day.

My Therapy Approach for Anxiety, Stress and More

One thing I’ve learned: if you struggle with anxiety, it’s usually chronic. You can’t breathe it away, healthy eat it away, or exercise it away. Trust me, I tried all of that and more.

Those things help for sure, but they’re not the full answer. What’s needed is a shift, a new way of relating to your pain instead of avoiding it or letting it run your life.

At Therapy for Men RVA, we use a blend of lifestyle changes and an approach called Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT). ACT helps men learn how to accept what can’t be changed, take action on what can, and build the wisdom to know the difference.

ACT isn’t just talk therapy. It’s “do” therapy. As the saying goes – in order to change your life, you have to change your life. I can’t make those changes for you, but I will be your cornerman. In sessions, we will help you build, test, and refine a personal game plan that works for you. Then you go out into life and execute it.

I’ve worked with people of all ages and backgrounds, facing a wide range of challenges from everything from general anxiety to psychosis to heroin addiction. These days, I mostly work with men – from college kids to guys in their 50s and 60s – who are dealing with stress, anxiety, lack of purpose, loneliness, or just feeling stuck. Because those are my people.
